Dear Parents,
With the new school year comes many changes. Since 8th grade is a gateway year to high school, scholars will be taking an 8th grade science EOG. To prepare your scholar, he/she must put forth the effort. I will be facilitating their learning as needed. Scholars will be using LearnEd notebooks to complete notes. Notes must be completed at home, before each class. If a scholar does not have internet access at home, he/she may set up an appointment to come before school or complete them during Academic Enrichment (with their teacher’s permission). Notes for an entire LearnEd notebook (3-6 weeks of notes) can be completed in about an hour or less and can be completed early. If notes are taken on a daily basis, they should usually take no more than 10 minutes. This puts the responsibility of learning on the scholars’ shoulders. I look forward to hearing about many more labs and activities in the class. Collaboration and individual inquiry will be emphasized instead of copying notes in class daily.
The best form of communication for me is through email, which will be answered within a 48-hour time span. You will also be able to keep up with your scholars’ work and what was done in class from my weebly page and google classroom. You can get the google classroom codes from the weebly page.

Required materials
- one composition notebook for notes and to store LearnEd notebooks as scholars receive them
- pencils/pens EVERYDAY (black or blue ink ONLY)
- folder
- colored pencils
- markers,
- covered pencil sharpener
- highlighters
- other supplies your scholar likes to use to remain organized
- Scholars will be happy to know that Warm Ups (called Bell Ringers this year) will be printed and handed out to them this year to be glued into composition book. Several of the Bell Ringers will be completed at the beginning of class. Bell Ringers are essential for review of material. Sometimes warm ups will introduce new concepts.
- After the Bell Ringer is completed, we will go over any concepts that scholars completed notes for at home. Scholars may be given a short explanation of a lab or activity to be completed in class. Or they may be using the class set of Chromebooks in an inquiry lesson. Expectations will be high for the scholars to do their best in each activity each day.
- Chrome books will be assigned by number. I will assign a number to your scholar the first day I see them. They will use the same Chromebook each time we use them. As soon as your scholar receives his/her Chrome book for a class activity, he/she will be expected to examine it for damage. He/she will immediately report any damage as soon as he/she gets it. I will record the damage and will talk to the scholar in the class before your scholar’s class to decide on the action to take. Some wear and tear is expected, but intentional damage, neglect, or repeated damage will result in suspension of use of Chromebooks. Consequences may include: use of Chromebook while sitting with me or an alternate assignment that does not utilize the computer. Repeated or intentional damage will be reported to administration for further consequences.
- Behavior—My classroom rules is PROPS: Be PREPARED, Be RESPONSIBLE, Be ON TIME, Be POLITE, Be SAFE.
- Phones—This is a “Phone Free Zone.” Scholars are expected to keep their cell phones in their lockers, turned off, at all times. Phones are not allowed in the classrooms or hallways. This rule does not just include phones, but ALL electronic devices.
- Homework, other than completing notes, will not be assigned daily. Homework is never busy work. It will be used to introduce a new topic, continue learning, prepare for tests, or complete at home projects. Grades for homework will usually be recorded as informal grades except for major projects. Informal grades will also be assigned for some classwork, some minor labs and activities, and some quizzes. Formal grades will be assigned for major tests, labs and activities, and for projects completed at home. Informal grades account for 35% of your scholar’s grade; formal grades account for 65%. Late work will receive a lower grade. Late informal work will receive no more than 50%. Late formal work will lose 10 points for each late day.
- Parents, teachers, and scholars work together as a team to ensure success for your scholar. Communication is essential. Feel free to email me with any concerns. My job is to facilitate learning, assess work, record grades weekly, and keep my weebly up to date. The scholars’ job is to complete work daily to the best of their ability, turn in completed work on time, study for tests and communicate with parents! Parents’ jobs include staying up to date by visiting Power school and my weebly, helping scholars remember to complete work and study, and stay in touch with teachers. Together we will see success in your scholar.
